In 1985, Calvo Enterprises expanded into the grocery retail business by acquiring Pay-Less Supermarkets. Then, it was a grocery outlet with five branches—today there are now eight branches, soon to be nine, with gross annual sales exceeding $90 million and a workforce of hundreds. Mike Benito and Kathy Calvo Sgro have lead Pay-Less into the 21st century of grocery retail. The company has continued to innovate and enhance its product offerings, its facilities, and its customers’ shopping experience so that it is now the premier supermarket for the people of Guam. The strength of Pay-Less lies in its mission statement: “to provide the greatest customer value every day.” Aside from happy customers, Pay-Less features an unparalleled product selection with over 35,000 items for customers to choose from everyday, including 1,200 bonus-buys in stores every day. Pay-Less also offers the freshest and most wide-ranging inventory of produce on-island. Pay-Less is able to offer its customers such quality goods at inexpensive rates because of its relationships abroad. They have developed a first-rate supply chain by partnering with Bruno’s Quality Produce in California and with Associated Grocers, located in the Pacific Northwest.
